A Hopeful View on Crime?

The Washington Post published an interview with D.C. Police Chief Ramsey discussing his tenure as the longest-serving police chief in the district in recent history.

On a related note, stay tuned for a follow-up public safety forum this fall - LCCA and ANC2F's Crime and Public Safety Committee are planning a follow-up public safety forum for the fall.

I wonder if Cheif Ramsey has read "Broken Windows: The Police and Neighborhood Safety," by James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling in the Atlantic Monthly (March 1982). Guiliani used the principles discussed in this article to drastically reduce crime in NYC. Crime may be down in DC compared to the past stats for DC but it not so great when compared to other major cities. DC still has aggressive panhandlers, "parkers", and way to many vagrants, and vacant buildings. If you let people get away with the small crimes they think they can get away with the big crimes.

The vagrants and the homeless have nothing to do with the police. They lock them up, and the courts let them out. There is no penal system in this liberal haven, and everyone in charge of the government and the courts believes that everyone can be "healed." Wake up and smell the crack pipe people!! Some people are just broken and can't be fixed. I just heard from a friend who works at the 3rd District that they arrested a guy the other night for burglary. They said that this guy has at least 4 prior arrests for burglary. What is he doing on the street? Maybe he is the guy doing all of the window breaking in that book?

Speaking of crime in the Logan Circle area, can anyone tell me your sense of safety walking around alone at night, particularly if you're a woman? Are there streets/corners to avoid, etc?
