Memorial Day in Logan Circle

Wreath on LoganCeremonies and celebrations in commemoration of Memorial Day were held in Logan Circle Park yesterday. Organized by the National Park Service, with support from a throughout the community (including the LCCA), the program brought together a wide variety of people from all over the nation to remember those who have died in service to our nation. Highlights included music courtesy of the high school band from General Logan's hometown of Murphysboro, Illinois, a stunning rendition of "God Bless America" performed by Mrs. Virginia Hayes Williams (mother of Mayor Williams), and a solemn ceremony presenting a wreath at the base of the memorial to General Logan.

All in all, it was a beautiful day in the circle, and a fitting capstone on the day. Thanks to everybody who helped out or attended!

It has been fun to see the reunion of the Illinois State Society of Washington, DC and the Logan Circle Community after an interval of almost sixty years. According the The Washington Post archives, the association started about 1901 when the statue was erected. The Illinois State Society and the Dames of the Loyal Legion, headed by Mary Logan Tucker, joined with the Iowa Circle Association in 1930 to rename the circle as Logan Circle. Don't worry, the folks from Iowa were getting plenty of attention then since their man President Herbert Hoover was in The White House. There is of course a Logan Circle in Philadelphia and Logan Square in Chicago with a Logan Statue in Grant Park in Chicago and other Logan statues around the country. Thanks to the Logan Circle Community for the hospitality given to visitors from Illinois and Illinois expatriates living in the national capital region.

Thanks for your kind words, and for coming out yesterday. We always enjoy hearing history about our neighborhood's namesake.
