Shooting At Helix

Last night, two guests at the Helix Hotel had an argument - parts of which have been caught on tape.

They moved the argument outside, and a gun was pulled. As the victim ran, at least 17 shots were fired. The victim was shot in the back. Cars parked on Rhode Island were hit, and the Holiday Inn at 15th & Rhode Island also was hit.

The victim was hospitalized. No word yet on the whereabouts of the shooter.

We will post details as they become available.

From a Rhode Island Avenue resident:

Last night at about 1:30 a.m., I was walking my dog and noticed a number of policemen and police cruisers at 15th and Rhode Island. Rhode Island had been closed down. The officer at the intersection told me that somebody had been shot earlier and that "there were shotgun shell cases"all over Rhode Island. A car at 15th and N Street was marked off with police tape and there was one cruiser there. The guy at my front desk told me that one of our residents had heard shots at about 1:00 a.m.

was anyone else hurt?

Not that we have heard of. The front desk person at the Holiday Inn missed the bullet by just a short margin - thankfully!

any thoughts about why this hasn't been in washington post, times or on the local news?

My personal guess is that the victim, MPD, and the hotels may have issued "no comment."

I came home just as police were taping off the area. They seemed unconcerned, unsurprised and flippantly dismissed my questions. "The person shot will be ok, no big deal." Typical.

I even wrote FOx 5 and Channel 7 and they didn't cover it. The only thing NW and especially Logan circle is by the news -- is COVERED UP

FINALLY!
I heard the gun shots Saturday Nite from my Apartment Room at the Latrobe. I inquired all weekend about what happened from dozens of people and local businesses. No one knew, just rumors. ZERO word from any of the local networks or papers. Chris K kindly pointed me to this blog. I will do all I can to let my neighbors know what happened. I am much relieved that no one in our neighborhood was hurt. Will Pelant.

I heard the gunshots from my apartment at the Latrobe too. I knew this blog would have an explanation even if no other media covered it.

What concerns me about that this lack of awareness is that there seems to be less public pressure to come up with effective ways of decreasing crime in the Logan area.

I found this statistic especially disappointing:

"during the month of September there was a 47% increase in reported crimes within the boundaries of the 3rd District...compared to September 2004."

it's ridiculous that the washington post doesn't have at least a paragraph, considering 1) that it's 500 yards away 2) that there is plenty of space to talk about junior high schoolers in gaithersburg lighting fires and haunted houses in rural md.

i wrote to the ombudsman saying so much. i encourage you to write too. here are the email addresses:

I live right across the street from the shooting. I was woke up by the argument at around 1:30 (it was definatly later than's being reported here). I thought I heard a cop car honk its horn, so I thought the cops were there to break up the fight. Shortly after the shots came. First there were two shots, followed by a round of shots, probably about a dozen total. I didn't even have enough time to get off my bed and run for my phone before the police where there, so I was wondering if it was a shoot out with the police. I'd looked everywhere for a report on this, and no one has mentioned it. Finally, I found this site which gave me slightly more information.

There may be some confusion with the time change on Saturday. We understand that the shooting took place between 2:00-2:30 EDT, which is the same as 1:00-1:30 EST. So, depending on when you set your clocks, it likely happened between 1-1:30 or 2-2:30.

if at least 17 shots were fired- were there multiple shooters, or was it an assualt weapon? i thought a "normal" gun only fired 6 shots.

Handguns are generally revolvers or semi-automatics. Revolvers usually have 6 bullets per cylinder. Semi-automatic weapons usually have 14-17 bullets. Then there are the assault weapons that can hold 30, 40, up to 75 rounds.

I understand that the people involved in this incident were visiting the Helix (either the club or a special event). What kind of people bring guns to a party? Perhaps the Helix should be checking their patrons for guns or other weapons (like at the airport)...
